Congratulations to Chris and Colin on a stunning find! This is very exciting for all of us, and for those of us on the east coast, it pushes the closest known S. hineana site hundreds of miles closer to us!

On June 20, 2007, Chris Evans of Midhurst, Ontario was looking for dragonflies along the roadside adjacent to the Minesing Wetlands, Simcoe County, Ontario when he caught a dragonfly he initially assumed was a Clamp-tipped Emerald (Somatochlora tenebrosa). Photos were taken and were sent to me. My jaw nearly hit the floor when I realized that the individual was actually a Hine's Emerald, a species that I and others, including Wayne Steffens, have spent time in the past searching for (unsuccessfully) on the Bruce Peninsula and Manitoulin Island, not too far from known Hine's Emerald sites in Michigan.
On June 27, I visited the Minesing Wetlands along with Mike and Robert Oldham and Wasyl Bakowsky, and we located several more Hine's Emeralds. Since then, I've been working with Chris Evans and Chris' Odonata mentor, Bob Bowles to gather as much information as possible on the population in the Minesing Wetlands. We plan to compile our results and publish something on this new occurrence later this year or next.
The Minesing Wetlands is a vast wetland of international significance spanning an area of over 6,000 hectares (15,000 acres). Minesing contains a complex of different wetland types including fens, marshes, swamps and bogs, each supporting a number of sensitive flora and fauna, some of which are rare or endangered. The Hine's Emerald is yet another rare species of the Minesing Wetlands and an indication of the extreme value of these wetlands to the conservation of Ontario's biodiversity!
Cheers,
Colin
