Dear colleagues
The Spanish Ministry of Education and Science has a program (Juan de la
Cierva) to hire young PhD scientists to work in Spanish universities
during three years. Salary is 32000 euro/year (including taxes). The
applicants must previously contact a research group in Spain that must
select them and propose their name in the selective process. This
program is open to all nationalities and a previous knowledge of Spanish
is not necessary (but of course would be helpful).
I would be glad to receive applications from young odonatologists
interested in joining us in our laboratory, colaborating in the
following grant, recently awarded to our group:
Evolutionary ecology of reproductive strategies: Odonates as a model system.
SUMMARY:
This project intends the study of different aspects of the ecology of
the reproductive behaviour of a group of insects with highly diversified
strategies. The goals are related to three main objectives:
(1) the study of the mechanisms of parthenogenesis and reproductive
strategies of Ischnura hastata, the only known parthenogenetic odonate
species. The presence of a recently identified bacterial endosymbiont,
the philogeography of the species in the archipelago of the Azores, the
type of parthenogenesis, and the incidence of parasites will be studied
in asexual populations of this species.
(2) different experiments on sexual selection in odonates, with special
reference to the Calopterygidae and their genital evolution.
(3) hybridization and the maintenance of colour polymorphism in
Ischnura. The first systematic estimations of androchrome frequency will
be made in Iberian populations of I. graellsii and I. elegans, and the
philogeography of both species will be analyzed in the peninsula, as
well as an analysis of its hybridization.
The different topics will be approached from an evolutionary and
functional perspective.
Please feel free to forward this email to potentially interested people.

The deadline for applications is 25 days from 8 March.
All the best,
Adolfo Cordero
