Hello all - we have a new dragonfly enthusiast, John Kimbler, who has
been busy photographing every odonate that crosses his path. He is in
Italy and would like to know if anyone can help ID the species he is
photographing. John's website is nicely arranged and there are small
previews of some whopping big images should you choose to count
ommatidia or some such. He was happy to have the website posted on
odonata-l and if you have a minute, you should take a look just to see
the colorful inhabitants near the volcanic crater Lago de'Averno.
John's e-mail address is in the cc line and his letter is below:

I've been shooting macro for about 3 months and I've been shooting
dragonflies for 2 -man are they an addictive subject! I was shooting out
in an abandoned lot when I saw a bright red dragon:

and I knew there had to be a source of fresh water nearby. The closest
lake to my house is Lago de'Averno (a lake in an dormant volcano) and
sure enough the area is loaded with dragonflies and I try to get out
there to shoot at least 3 times a week. A few reds, and few yellow ones,
but mostly blue and purple:

Yellow with black markings:

Blue with green eyes:

And the purple dragons: http://dalantech.smugmug.com/gallery/1467293/5

I even recently caught a blue mating pair:

And I've missed 2 emergences by just an hour or so (the wings haven't
"inflated" yet):

Lots of images on my Damsel and Dragonfly gallery (none of them are
cropped), but unfortunately there is very little information on the
different species of dragons here in Italy -and what I've found is in
Italian :-( If you could identify them for me I would be very
grateful!
